The Megaphone is an attachment that can be added to overhead speakers to amplify and direct sound.Inspired by the “Forest Megaphones” project. The soft wood of the device contributes to the sound quality. The shape and angles provides the emitted sound directionality and amplification. The Megaphone is built to be installed either straight down from the ceiling or at an angle from a beam. The soft wood of the device contributes to the sound quality and the shape and angles provides the emitted sound directionality and amplification. The Megaphone is built to be installed either straight down from the ceiling or at an angle from a beam. The Megaphone, has eight planes making each plane joins to one another at a 135° angle. This is important as the angle of the planes allows for the optimum refraction of sound waves to create crisp and directional audio. When used as a hand held device, The Megaphone not only amplifies sounds emitted from the smaller end, but enhances the quality and volume of sound heard from it as well.
The wood used in The Megaphone can be picked to create the desired sound effect. Denser, harder woods create more sustain and sharper tones, while lighter woods produce softer tones and less sustain.
The Olive is inspired by the “Echea Amphora”, an ancient greek device used to amplify sounds in churches and amphitheatres. The structure contains the low frequency sounds and also provides an amplified and smooth result through its resonating features. We chose clay as our material as not only is it a sound absorbing material it is also sustainably sourced. The Olive must be placed embedded in walls or as a lone speaker on a stand. It can play sounds at lower volumes and help amplify them into the space when heard from the smaller end. As wall inserts they can potentially replaceheadphones and as standalones they can create ambient music. They would do remarkably well with ASMR as they are Helmholtz resonators that work best with one frequency. We chose clay as our material as not only is it a sound absorbing material it is also sustainably sourced. As the shape of this object gives it a very strong visual identity we recommend wall inserts where possible to help retain the visitor’s focus on the art and the curator’s vision. These pots are highly customisable and should be coloured, glazed, and finished to create the right type of atmosphere for the exhibit.
